Help with Addiction

Decide to make a life change. The first step in the healing process is to
decide to make a change. This decision to change will be the first of many
guiding lights along the road to a healthy, balanced life.

Get Help. Part of the magic of recovery is realizing that we are not alone
in dealing with our addictions. Groups like Alcoholics Anonymous,
Narcotics Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, or Debtors
Anonymous are invaluable in providing a support network of people who have
similar life experiences and have been successful in beating their
addictions.

Involve loved ones. Share the journey with the people in your life and let
them know you need their support. There may be family members or friends
that have dealt with the same issues and can share their own triumphs and
challenges.

Give it to God. Whether you are involved in an organized religion or not,
turning your problems over to a higher power is a source of strength and
hope. Recognizing that we don't have all the answers, and don't have to,
is very freeing.

Reclaim your personal power. Addiction is often amplified by our feelings
of helplessness. You can do this and anything else you put your mind to.

If you fall, get back up. This is a journey not a job interview. You get
as many shots at this as you need and want. If you fall, get up and
continue on your way. Distinguish what the stumbling block was so that you
will be able to recognize it in the future.

Explore your emotions. Be willing to feel angry, sad, frustrated, joyful,
grateful, or anything else that comes up for you. Substance abuse is often
a cover-up for emotions that we don't want to feel. A great therapist can
be a valuable asset in this part of the journey.

Come out of the closet. Release yourself from the burden of your addiction
by being honest. By admitting this 'secret', it will lose its power over
you.

Know you are not alone. Many people have been in the same situation you
are in right now and have pulled themselves out. With persistence and
awareness you will too.
